Why lofts inside circular structures need different planning than lofts in a conventional home.
A loft in a round structure behaves differently than a loft in a rectangular home. Because the roofline slopes down toward the perimeter, usable headroom shrinks the further you move from the center. A loft that looks generous on paper can feel cramped in practice if headroom isn't mapped carefully.
The first step is establishing a headroom diagram — plotting where standing height, seated height, and crawl-height zones fall across the loft footprint. This tells us where a bed can go, where storage makes more sense than living space, and where a guardrail needs to sit for safety without blocking light from a central skylight or ring, if the kit includes one.
Stair or ladder placement is the second major decision. In a compact round footprint, the stair to a loft can either support the layout below or work against it. We typically test a few stair positions against the main-level plan before settling on one, checking sightlines, storage impact, and how it feels to move between levels.
Guardrails, structural framing for the loft floor, and any dormers or roof modifications are coordinated with the structural kit and, where needed, a structural engineer — the loft is one of the more structurally involved parts of a round-home design, so it benefits from being resolved early rather than added on later.
